Film “The Birth & History of Western Swing” at Texan Theater

The Bob Wills Fiddle Festival & Contest presents a special showing of the 2022 documentary film, “The Birth & History of Western Swing.” This film that explores the origin and development of western swing music, a dance music that emerged from Fort Worth, Texas, during the Great Depression. Directed by Mike Markwardt, the film details how the genre blended various cultural influences—including black, white, rural, and urban styles—into a vibrant musical gumbo, highlighting the contributions of pioneers like Bob Wills and Milton Brown. The documentary traces western swing’s evolution, its spread across the Southwest, and its lasting legacy as a joyous and infectious American sound.
